To Be a Caregiver

Sami Peterson of Fort Collins, Colorado was recently named "Caregiver of the Year" by the National Family Caregivers Association and Homewatch CareGivers, a national provider and educator of in-home caregivers. Peterson, 51, cares for her husband Rob, 66, who has Huntington?s disease, and son Will, 17, who is developmentally disabled. She also is a project and case manager at the Larimer County Workforce center.

Her busy schedule tracks medical appointments, Will?s high school activities and job, Rob?s part-time caregivers, her own work, and even what?s for dinner each night. She feels a special calling to help employers understand that caregiving is not something one can walk away from or organize out of their lives. Sami was nominated by her stepdaughter and other family members. Judges cited her caregiving while also working.

Today more than 65 million Americans provide home care to loved ones according to a recent report by the National Alliance for Caregivers and AARP. The report says caregivers help loved ones on average more than 20 hours a week.

Peterson credits a weekly Huntington?s support group along with her church, relatives and friends with helping her stay positive and focused on her family. Friendships made through Will?s school also have buoyed her. "The most important thing is not to do it alone," she says. "It?s easy to feel alone. You really have to do it in community."

What an inspiring story! And what a challenge to those of us who at this time are not caregivers to be sure we are well aware of caregiving family members and friends to offer them loving support and practical help. Sometimes people are too proud to ask for help, but if we offer it gently and kindly, they may accept.

Love,
Pastor Dave
