Surprise, Surprise

WHAT AN IRONY!  Did you hear about this? Craig Cobb, a white supremest who has built an all-white racist hub in North Dakota was recently told by host Trisha Goddard on an episode of NBC’s “The Trisha Show” that he has sub-Saharan African blood in his DNA! Via an official DNA test, Goddard revealed to Cobb his results indicated his ancestry was 86% European and 14% sub-Saharan African.

Cobb was shocked and in denial as might be expected. Obviously, by hating blacks, he is hating himself including his own ancestors. After revealing the news to him, Goddard attempted to fist bump him and called him “bro,” but Cobb pulled back his hand.

The audience cheered, but Cobb simply responded by saying “I’ll tell you this, oil and water don’t mix.”  He added that despite any test results, he will always be a  “border guard for the purebreds.”  One wonders whether his racist followers will want a “mongrel” as their leader?!

As any responsible anthropologist would tell us, the notion that we can classify people by race is a scientific absurdity. There is only one race on earth and that is the human race. We all have mixed ancestry and that is something to applaud and not deplore.

Scientists have not found any significant differences among the so-called “races.” Whatever differences there may be physically or intellectually can be traced to our immediate ancestors and the environment in which we are raised. How else to explain the genius of some black, brown, red, and yellow people and the stupidity and bigotry of someone like Craig Cobb? Every “race” has produced both wonderful and awful human beings. No group is superior to another because of the accident of the color of skin.

Our challenge today is to move beyond these inappropriate distinctions that have divided the human race by color and ancestry -- yes, and by that other outmoded distinction of sexual orientation -- and come together as human beings using all that we have and all that we are to solve the real problems we face together:  the environment, poverty, equal rights and opportunities for all people, and the elimination of war and violence to settle our national and personal problems. If we can’t go forward hand-in-hand to do that, we better all move to Craig Cobb’s hideout in North Dakota.
