“Why Should This Child Be Born?”

In Bethlehem, so long ago, a little child was born.

   The times were hard, his parents poor . . .

Why should this child be born?  Why should this child be born.

The child became a man who taught

   that children come from God,

a gift of which we never ask . . .

Why should this child be born?  Why should this child be born.

To show a child our love and care

   is worship of our God,

The reason faith brings to this world . . .

Why should this child be born?  Why should this child be born.

Today when countless children feel

   neglect and pain untold,

We hear again the ancient cry . . .

Why should this child be born?  Why should this child be born.

Dear God, when we in every child

   can see your Son reborn,

We’ll know the answer Christmas gives . . .

Why should this child be born?  Why should this child be born.
